The Municipality of Leganes aims to optimize its geographical position as the first town from the city of Iloilo with inland and coastal areas that have thriving economic activities by establishing a Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

An SEZ in Leganes will serve as a catalyst for municipal economic growth and will complement the city and province of Iloilo through direct foreign investments, particularly in the production of steel and other light to medium industries. The regulatory flexibility institutionalized by SEZs ushered in the establishment of 5,400 SEZs worldwide, and it has driven the economic growth of 147 countries.

The creation of an SEZ and the ease of doing business of Leganes will further grow the economy. The local government has identified a consolidated public and private land area of 286 hectares (186 hectares – municipal owned; 100 hectares – under a Fishpond Lease Agreement with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources) and has drawn up a master plan for its development and to attract investment. The Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) has issued a Board Resolution for the 186-hectare property which provides assurance that the property has met the necessary criteria and approvals from the relevant authorities which can enhance the location for investment and business activities.
