The European consultancy firm SWECO, based in Sweden, conducts its feasibility study for the proposed Metro Iloilo Integrated Public Transport System. The study is spearheaded through the engagement of the Metro Iloilo–Guimaras Economic Development Council (MIGEDC) and will span a period of eight months, followed by an additional four months for the finalization of the report.
The study aims to develop a strategic and technically sound framework for a modern and integrated mass transportation system covering the MIGEDC area. The final output is expected to serve as the primary basis for both foreign and local investments, guiding public and private sector stakeholders on the best and most viable transportation solutions suited for the region.
Among of the attendees were Ret. PCol. Uldarico Garbanzos, Head of the Iloilo City Traffic and Transportation Management Office (ICTTMO), representatives from MIGEDC/LEDIP, Santa Barbara Mayor Doc Dennis Superficial, Municipal Administrator Alfredo Alas-as, Municipal Planning and Development Coordinator/designated action officer Vincent Lusaya, and other LGU personnel.
Also present was Mr. Stefan Ekelund, advisor from Swedfund, the investment and development arm of the Swedish government. Ekelund reaffirmed Sweden’s interest in the Philippines, noting that Swedfund supports similar initiatives in other developing countries.
With this study underway, all member LGUs of MIGEDC will be waiting for the SWECO’s proposal and findings. The final report will guide the region towards a more efficient, accessible, and environmentally sustainable transportation in the future.
